Combined versus leg-wise stops, the two-sided mirror, BankNifty's overnight asymmetry, and why the fleet beats picking a tool for the day

Two nights of adjudicating claims and testing structure: a broker-seeded stop-loss claim, a volume-profile reversal system, short-side BTST, the mirror seller split by side, calendar seasonality, and regime switching.

QQuestion 1· asked by the trader

A post argued that a combined-premium stop beats leg-wise stops on the 9:20 straddle. True?

AOptionsBuyer· answer from the data

The opposite, by a wide margin. On identical legs over twelve years: leg-wise 25% stop +₹3.49L with a ₹53k drawdown, leg-wise 50% +₹3.81L; combined +25% ₹1.15L with a ₹100k drawdown, combined +40% ₹1.20L with ₹135k. Combined stops destroy two-thirds of the profit and double the drawdown, because the dying leg subsidises the exploding leg. The post's diagnosis of the "double-stop slap" was right and frequent — 18% of days, average −₹3,304 — but it is a priced-in cost that the other days pay for three times over. Engineering away the bad feeling surrenders the profit. An independent re-implementation reproduced the original result within ₹300.

QQuestion 2· asked by the trader

A volume-profile "failed auction" reversal system claiming $10k a month?

AOptionsBuyer· answer from the data

Its mechanical core, tested faithfully on NIFTY futures with real volume over two years (prior-day 70% value area, reclaim-close entry, the author's stops and targets): 421 trades, −₹59k with a point-of-control target and −₹222k with a 2R target, negative in both years. It fades exactly the moments the pivot system follows — the follower made ₹1.3–1.55L a year on the same candles. The claimed edge lives entirely in the untestable order-flow layer, which is also the discretionary escape hatch.

QQuestion 3· asked by the trader

"NIFTY keeps falling — why not short overnight too?"

AOptionsBuyer· answer from the data

On NIFTY the full-history short-side BTST is zero net of costs: the 2025–26 profits are real but regime-only, with no base rate underneath. The find was BankNifty: shorting after a down day was positive over the full history — about +21,350 points over 1,432 nights, roughly ₹4.5L net at one lot, profit-to-drawdown around 5. NIFTY's overnight is an upward tide regardless of the day; BankNifty's overnight continues both ways (up days gap up ~49 points, down days gap down ~15). The BankNifty paper bot became two-sided; the NIFTY twin stays long-only by design — its silence on weak days is the trade.

QQuestion 4· asked by the trader

Should the mirror seller drop its weaker side?

AOptionsBuyer· answer from the data

Never. Split by thesis over eleven years, NIFTY sold-puts +₹5.36L versus sold-calls +₹5.56L; BankNifty +₹5.46L versus +₹6.18L with the call side at a third of the drawdown. Neither side alone is positive every year — longs were red in 2024 and 2026, shorts in 2023 — the all-green record belongs to the pair, each side insuring the other's winter. A BTST is a one-sided machine (drift); a stop-and-reverse is two-sided. Know which kind you own.

QQuestion 5· asked by the trader

Is there a best month? Can a day's character be read at 10:15 and the right tool deployed?

AOptionsBuyer· answer from the data

No cell of a month-by-month table across four strategies passed the bar; the glowiest (one strategy 9 for 9 in November) was nine samples with no mechanism. The portfolio answer mattered more: a four-strategy NIFTY book summed monthly from 2015 to 2026 averaged ₹27,484 a month, 72% green months, maximum drawdown ₹1.16L against ₹2.46L for the pivot alone, longest run of red months three, and the longest underwater stretch 426 days once versus 1,402 for the single system. Regime switching failed harder: on twelve years of real premiums, always running the 10:15 straddle made ₹2.11L while the best switcher made ₹1.09L with a worse drawdown, because intraday-only trend following is −₹2.38L with 26% green days — the switcher chose between a working tool and a broken one. The stop-loss already detects movement when it happens; forecasting it is the uncapped error. Same verdict on BankNifty.
