The first guru who checks out, and the trader whose recovery was real but whose moral was wrong

A US Investing Champion's disclosed all-time-high breakout rules reproduce on Indian stocks; a Reddit "first-five-minute candle" turnaround does not. Both posts were true stories — only one of them had the right explanation.

QQuestion 1· asked by the trader

A US Investing Champion disclosed his rules — all-time-high breakout after a six-month drought, day-low stop, moving-average trail. Do they work on Indian stocks?

AOptionsBuyer· answer from the data

His shape reproduces. On 275 stocks over eight years, 292 trades: with an 8% stop and a 50-day trail, win rate 40%, average winner +22% held 98 days, average loser −6.8%, payoff 3.27 — against his own claimed 33%, +15%, −4.5% and 3.5. His "ten trades made all the profit" is confirmed and stronger: the top ten returned +509% to +983% while all other 282 trades were net negative in three of four variants. The machine is real; the headline return is sizing, leverage and one extraordinary year; the price is 60–86% losing trades and total dependence on ten unpredictable monsters. He is the rare honest one — his transparency about the breakeven trades is the lesson.

QQuestion 2· asked by the trader

Could it be run as a real portfolio?

AOptionsBuyer· answer from the data

Later tested with five slots and realistic capital: +2.4% CAGR, −27.6% drawdown, 19% win rate. The shape validates and the concentration destroys implementability — which of the 292 trades lands in your five slots is luck.

QQuestion 3· asked by the trader

A trader posted eight red years, then a recovery via a first-five-minute-candle break with a 30-point stop and 60-point target. Real?

AOptionsBuyer· answer from the data

The recovery is real; the attribution is wrong. The breakeven hit rate for that stop and target is 39%; the measured rate on real futures minutes over two years was 35% — −₹1.21L, 241 stops against 124 targets, and −₹81k trading both directions. It was the fifth independent confirmation that intraday index breakouts do not pay retail costs. What saved him was the discipline stack in the same post — a small restart, a journal, slow sizing, no revenge trades — and his own admission that he kept adding rules from what the journal showed. The journal was the strategy. We named the pattern: the misattributed recovery — true story, wrong moral.

QQuestion 4· asked by the trader

Which stocks drift overnight, and can you buy the list?

AOptionsBuyer· answer from the data

The gradient is real — the most volatile names drift 50–125 basis points a night against a 30-basis-point fixed cost, megacaps 5–10 — but the top-twenty list was contaminated by 5%-circuit fantasy fills, survivorship and duplicates. Trade the trait ex-ante, not the names; and the fleet already owns the overnight factor through index futures without single-name earnings bombs (overnight drops of 20%, 13% and 9.7% appear in the tail list).
